Masoor dal Curry

This is a dish which according to me goes perfectly well with rotis and puris. This one ranks topmost amongst my list of dishes that go with my rotis.
I have tried this with many other dals but masoor brought out the flavours of the ingredients so well that none of the other dals did.
My husband ate off his bowlful without a nag.I was pleasantly surprised as roti and dal is not just his kind of food.
Ingredients :
  • Masoor dal-200gms
  • Cinnamon stick-1inch
  • Cloves(laung)-2
  • cardamom(elaichi)-1
  • Chopped onions-1 medium
  • Ginger garlic paste-1tsp
  • Chopped tomatoes-1 medium
  • Green chillies-2
  • Red chilli powder-1/2tsp or more to taste
  • Corriander(dhania powder)-1/2tsp
  • Turmeric powder-1/4tsp
  • Salt-to taste
  • Chopped corriander leaves(cilantro)-for garnish
  • Oil-2tbsp
Method:
Wash and soak dal in water for about 15mins.
Heat oil in a pan and add the cinnamon, clove and the cardamom.Saute.
Add the onions and slit green chillies and saute till golden brown.

Add the ginger garlic paste and saute till the raw smell leaves.
Add the chopped tomatoes, chilli, corriander and turmeric powder.Saute well.
Add half the amount of salt and saute.

Add the soaked dal and abour 2 cups of water and boil for 2 mins.

Close the lid and cook on low flame for about 10 mins.Stir ocassionally.
Add the remaining salt to taste.
Check if the dal has cooked. The dal should be cooked but not get completely mashed. This will give it a lovely texture when chewed.
Add water or reduce the curry on high flame to match ur liking.
Garnish with chopped corriander.Serve hot.
